VISAKHAPATNAM: GITAM University is planning to introduce school system which is being practiced by the best universities in the world, announced Vice-Chancellor G. Subramanyam during the Board of Management (BOM) meeting here on Saturday.

The university schools would consist of departments and research centres in thrust areas and the same are kindred to each other to facilitate interdisciplinary teaching and research.

To start the process of establishing the schools, GITAM University was preparing to establish an autonomous school of excellence in International Business from the academic year 2010-11 on experimental basis, Prof. Subramanyam said. “It should strive to internationalise its activities, students, faculty and programmes and develop itself into a national think tank in international business contributing to the policy making of the nation”.

The school system was being contemplated because it was expected not only to strengthen collaboration between related departments both research and teaching, but also encourage them to introduce more interdisciplinary programmes.

The choice-based credit system (cafeteria approach) could be organised in the most effective way under a school system than in the existing system Prof. Subramanyam.

The V-C wanted more scientific journals on various subjects published. Since insurance cover for all students was essential in higher education the university was planning to introduce student insurance scheme in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad campuses.

Pro Vice-Chancellor D. Harinarayana, Registrar M. Potha Raju, Principals and other BOM members participated in this meeting.
